Welcome to the Volunteer New York!
Virtual Volunteer Center

Sometimes the biggest impact comes from the powerful force of a neighbor helping another neighbor. This page features volunteer opportunities to aid communities, agencies and those most vulnerable who have been impacted by COVID-19 (Coronavirus). We are working closely with our local partner agencies, county and state officials to ensure a coordinated response. Please note that volunteers are always needed for emergencies. If you are not able to volunteer for this recovery effort there are many other nonprofit agencies that can use your help throughout the year.

IMPORTANT:
If you think you may be sick or are feeling unwell, or have been in contact with someone who may have been exposed to COVID-19, we kindly ask that you please postpone your volunteer activity and utilize the resources and follow the advice provided by the NYS Department of Health. This precautionary measure is in support of the nonprofit and community in which you want to help.

Miles of Smiles Volunteers

Help brighten a smile for a senior—literally!—by creating Miles of Smiles bags. This is a great opportunity for students who need to fulfill community service hours (three bags equal one hour of volunteer service). Here's how it works: Fill a quart-sized Ziploc bag with all the products a senior needs for a healthy smile. Be sure to include a soft bristle toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and A Miles of Smiles Flyer (Miles of Smiles will provide this). Refer to the Miles of Smiles Instructions for more details. Drop off your Miles of Smiles bags at Meals on Wheels' Nanuet location (provided after you express interest below). It's that easy to help a senior in need!

Mental Health Mentors

Compeer programs match friendly, sociable volunteers with local adults who are in sustained recovery for mental health. The volunteer and their match typically take walks, grab a bite to eat, watch a movie, attend an art exhibit, visit the library, go shopping, or catch a sporting event together. Those who cannot meet in person can chat on the phone or by video chat. Volunteers provide an extra level of positive friendship, support, and social interaction to help their Compeer friends—and the volunteers themselves—feel more fulfilled and engaged. Volunteers receive comprehensive training before spending at least four hours per month and one year in duration with their Compeer friends. This gift of friendship helps build a bond of belonging and enhanced wellness. Givers gain! Note: Volunteers based in Rockland County are preferred.

Virtual Volunteers to Promote Social Media

Alliance for Safe Kids (ASK) is dedicated to connecting the community's youth and their families to helpful resources regarding mental health and substance abuse. It is very active on social media and it now needs the help of Virtual Volunteers to spread the word of upcoming programs, events, breaking news, and tips for parents and teens. By engaging once a week, the Virtual Volunteer will help relay important resources for kids and teens throughout the community. The Virtual Volunteer will follow, like, comment, share, mention, repost, and retweet ASK's social media. Engagement can occur on a weekly basis; it does not have to be a daily task. Volunteers can pick and choose items that speak to them personally and that they think can benefit their friends, families, and online communities. Check In with Neighbors During the COVID-19 Pandemic

During the coronavirus pandemic, vulnerable populations—including seniors and those with compromised immune systems—are especially at risk. Many people are staying at home and practicing social distancing to limit the spread. Fortunately, there are still ways to volunteer in the community while staying safe. People who are home and looking to help can check in with their neighbors by knocking on their doors (keeping a safe distance) or giving them a call to see what they need. The community is stronger and more resilient when we come together! IMPORTANT: If you think you may be sick or are feeling unwell, or have been in contact with someone who may have been exposed to COVID-19, please do not sign up for this opportunity. (Feel better!) By expressing interest in this opportunity below, you're helping Volunteer New York! better understand the number of community members taking action during this pandemic. To volunteer: Express interest below to let us know you've vowed to check in on your neighbors during this crisis Choose one or more neighbors to check-in with. Reach out to them by phone, video chat, email, or with a visit from a safe distance (i.e. standing outside their door or window). Let them know you were thinking of them and ask how they're feeling. If they aren't sure how to protect themselves, share the CDC's guidelines with them here. If they're reporting symptoms, remain at a safe distance and offer to help them contact their primary physician or healthcare provider so they may seek medical guidance. See the CDC's guidelines here for instructions.
