Opportunity Details

Science Barge Volunteers

The Science Barge is a prototype sustainable urban farm developed by NY Sun Works and acquired by Groundwork Hudson Valley in October, 2008 to be operated as an environmental education center. The Science Barge greenhouse, floating on the Hudson River, grows an abundance of fresh produce including tomatoes, melons, greens, and lettuce with zero net carbon emissions, zero pesticides, and zero runoff. All of the energy needed to power the Barge is generated by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels while the hydroponic greenhouse is irrigated solely by collected  rainwater and purified river water, thus operating completely “off the grid.” It is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York. It is now docked in downtown Yonkers just north of the Yonkers Pier.

During the winter, Barge Director Bob Walters will be on board every Sunday coordinating volunteer projects for those willing to brave the cold of winter on the Hudson (the greenhouse does stay relatively warm)!  Come any time between 12pm and 4pm and stay as long as you like. Please call Bob at 914-375-2151 or e-mail bob@groundworkhv.org if you are interested in participating.

During our growing season, from mid-April through early November, the Barge is open to volunteer every Thursday from 6pm-8pm and Sunday from 10am-12pm. During these hours you can stop by and join Bob Walters, the Director of the Barge, in various maintenance and repair projects.

If you are interested in being trained as a volunteer docent, call us to find out when the next training session is. We can always use more weekend docents!
