2023 Social Club Intern for Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum

Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) is seeking a compassionate and empathetic individual to assist the program coordinator for two social club programs within the Westchester community. This intern or volunteer will be responsible for working with staff and helping members interact within the program. They will also be responsible for designing, planning, and implementing at least two programs to assist members with social/relationship and job skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement two programs that include, but are not limited to, job-readiness training, relationship skills, social and hygiene skills, etc.
  • Assist in organizing and planning social events and activities for members on the autism spectrum, such as game nights, movie screenings, or outdoor outings
  • Facilitate group discussions and activities, ensuring that all members feel included and engaged in the conversation
  • Assist in identifying and addressing the unique needs of members on the autism spectrum, such as sensory sensitivities or communication challenges, and adapting club activities accordingly
  • Contribute ideas for new activities or programs that would benefit the social club and its members and assist in implementing those ideas as appropriate
  • Work closely to ensure a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for all members and ensure a positive experience
  • Always maintain a positive and professional demeanor, representing the social club and its mission in a respectful and responsible manner

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, psychology, social work, or a related field
  • Experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum
  • Knowledge of best practices related to career development and job readiness training
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed

Time Commitment:

  • 3-6 hours a week on average
  • Evenings on weekdays, possible mornings on Sundays
  • Dates dependent upon intern or volunteer's availability
