Housekeeping Volunteers

The Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley (RMHGHV) provides a temporary home-away-from-home for families with critically ill or traumatically injured children. RMHGHV is looking for a Housekeeping Volunteer to provide houseguests with a pleasant and comfortable stay by helping with housekeeping, maintenance, and day-to-day House activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide an atmosphere of warmth and support by interacting with houseguests and providing general assistance as needed
  • May be asked to give tours to guest families. Become familiar with the House, show guest families where to find things and how to work things
  • Perform daily House operation and housekeeping tasks as requested by staff, including laundry, restocking, organizing, restocking supply areas, preparing rooms for House guests, washing dishes and completing dishwasher cycles
  • Monitor refrigerators and pantry, discarding food as needed
  • Advise meal program guests on kitchen essentials
  • Pack up meals as leftovers
  • Circulate through the house to identify potential problems that might need staff attention
  • Assist staff as needed with special projects

Time commitment:

  • Volunteer a minimum of two 3-hour scheduled shifts per month
  • Shifts occur every day of the week; available shifts are:
    • 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
    • 5 p.m.-8 p.m.
  • Volunteers are asked to consider shifts as a serious commitment, for a minimum of one year, with minimal absences

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years old or older, unless accompanied by an adult
  • Personable, patient, flexible and good communicator
  • Able to deal with the public in a helpful and supportive manner
  • Resourceful and able to work independently and in a team
  • Able to represent the House in a professional manner
  • Demonstrate respect for confidentiality
  • Must be able to walk up and down stairs and lift at least 30 pounds

Training:

  • Attend new volunteer orientation
  • Volunteers will be trained by staff and other volunteers during their scheduled shift
  • Will be provided with a volunteer handbook
