Instrumental Music or Art Teacher

Songcatchers' After-School Music Program offers lessons on musical instruments to children ages 7-13, many of whom cannot afford private lessons. The children are taught by high school, college, and community volunteers. The volunteers themselves are mentored by a professional musician and music educator who serves as a resource and a guide in their teaching. Training includes an informal interview, orientation sessions, and ongoing meetings and training throughout the year.

Proficiency on the instrument and ability to read music is required. Consistent attendance from October through early June is also expected. Volunteer requests are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

The class schedule is below. Most volunteers come once a week as their schedule permits. All times below include: Circle Time, a time for snacks, group games, and community-building; a 45-minute lesson; and Performance Time, when the children perform for each other and learn to be a respectful audience.

Class schedule:

  • Tuesdays, 4-5:30 p.m.: Saxophone, Piano, Guitar, Trumpet
  • Wednesdays, 4-5:30 p.m.: Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet
