Step Up Mentor Program

Step Up mentoring programs provide young people with one-to-one volunteer mentors who empower the youth to take control of their lives and achieve substantial and sustainable results such as deterring teen pregnancy, decreasing violence, graduating high school/college and finding meaningful employment.

Our adolescents volunteer to participate in the program because they want to change something in their lives and would like support/guidance in the right direction. Mentors will receive intense training on how to work with our youths. Mentors are required to have 4 contacts a month with their youth, 2 phone calls every other week like a check in (20mins top) and 2 face to face . We meet once a month in a group setting on a Saturday 10am-1pm at the Palisades Mall upstairs in one of the community rooms from 10am-1pm, always on a Saturday (Saturday sessions count towards your face to face), so you are really setting up your face to face visit once a month. We will provide a calendar on our meetings each month. This program ends in June.

Our program is designed to be a set 9 month period (the school year) but we have had some mentors continue their relationship after the program has ended.

The criteria is providing one to one mentoring services to adolescents from Rockland County

1000. must be 25 years or older and have a college degree or have retained a job for at least 3 years. They must undergo a background check including finger printing and pass a 11 hour training. Passing the training is based on the candidates’ acceptance of the philosophic underpinnings of the program, ability to embrace the program’s methodology and the absence of significant unresolved issues around education, parenting and childhood.
