2019-2020 Community Garden Volunteers

The project is open to and welcomes the participation of any citizen of White Plains and surrounding communities (including groups) who would like to be involved. Your involvement could include: - Helping out with planting, watering, weeding and harvesting the community garden - Attending educational gardening and environmental workshops for families - Joining in community celebrations like our Fall Harvest Festival - Helping to develop new community gardens in your own house of worship - Taking a garden site for use by yourself, your family, your faith community or other community group Please call the White Plains Youth Bureau at: 422-1378 and ask for the Growing White Plains project if you have questions or would like to be a part of the program. Project Background: Growing White Plains is a community agriculture project of the City of White Plains. It began in 2010 with a community garden on the grounds of New York Presbyterian Hospital. In the summer of 2012 Bethel Baptist Church and other houses of worship in White Plains joined with Growing White Plains to develop a beautiful garden new garden at the corner of Prospect St. and Sterling Ave., on a parcel of land belonging to Bethel Baptist Church. The aims of the project include: - growing healthy, organically grown local produce for donation through local food pantries and soup kitchens, to help feed neighbors in need -promoting participation in organic vegetable gardening by people of all ages in White Plains -promoting environmental awareness through educational programs -promoting the health of the people of White Plains through awareness of the health benefits of a diet rich in locally grown fruits and vegetables
