Opportunity Details

Become a Citizen Scientist

Volunteers are needed!

Become a citizen scientist and be empowered to get out into your local water and see for yourself if water is safe for swimming or fish. Interested volunteers should contact pollution@savethesound.org for more information. Communities along the Sound where water quality monitoring will be occurring this summer include Port Chester, Rye, Scarsdale, Harrison, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, New Rochelle, Pelham, Mount Vernon and Greenwich. Additionally we are expanding onto Long Island where we will be monitoring Manhasset Bay and Little Neck Bay.
Volunteers will be needed 1 morning per week to collect water samples from Memorial Day through Labor Day, in order to build up a complete picture of water quality in the communities surrounding the western Sound. After completing training, volunteers will travel throughout their communities, once a week before 9am, with Save the Sound’s water monitoring coordinator. The collection time will likely only take 1 hour on 1 morning every week. This work is very important! We have found that fecal contamination is highest in the streams, creeks, and rivers that run through communities and flow to the shoreline.
The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available.
