Emergency Blood Drive - Larchmont

Donating blood is safe and easy. Because of the coronavirus, it is critical that healthy people donate to ensure that there is a blood supply for hospital patients. IMPORTANT: Donors' temperatures are checked before they donate blood. If they have a temperature of 99.5 or higher, they cannot donate. There is no history of any respiratory illness being spread through a blood transfusion; however, individuals who are unwell should remain at home to prevent exposing medical workers and others to the virus. Mental Health Mentors

Compeer programs match friendly, sociable volunteers with local adults who are in sustained recovery for mental health. The volunteer and their match typically take walks, grab a bite to eat, watch a movie, attend an art exhibit, visit the library, go shopping, or catch a sporting event together. Those who cannot meet in person can chat on the phone or by video chat. Volunteers provide an extra level of positive friendship, support, and social interaction to help their Compeer friends—and the volunteers themselves—feel more fulfilled and engaged. Volunteers receive comprehensive training before spending at least four hours per month and one year in duration with their Compeer friends. This gift of friendship helps build a bond of belonging and enhanced wellness. Givers gain! Note: Volunteers based in Rockland County are preferred.

Make Window Cards to Check In With Neighbors

During the coronavirus pandemic, vulnerable populations—including seniors and those with compromised immune systems—are especially at risk. Many people are staying at home and practicing social distancing to limit the spread. Fortunately, there are still ways to volunteer in the community while staying safe. People who are home and looking to help can check in with their neighbors by knocking on their doors (keeping a safe distance) or giving them a call to see what they need. You can also use these Neighborhood Wellness Cards to create color-coded packets so neighbors can alert you through their windows when they have a need. The community is stronger and more resilient when we come together! By expressing interest in this opportunity below, you're helping Volunteer New York! better understand the number of community members taking action during this pandemic. IMPORTANT: If you think you may be sick or are feeling unwell, or have been in contact with someone who may have been exposed to COVID-19, please do not sign up for this opportunity. (Feel better!) To volunteer: Express interest below to let us know you've vowed to check in on your neighbors during this crisis. Choose one or more neighbors to check-in with. Reach out to them by phone, video chat, email, or with a visit from a safe distance (i.e. standing outside their door or window). Let them know you were thinking of them and ask how they're feeling. Ask them if they'd be willing to use Neighborhood Wellness Cards so they can easily let you know if they need help. If they aren't sure how to protect themselves, share the CDC's guidelines with them here. If they're reporting symptoms, remain at a safe distance and offer to help them contact their primary physician or healthcare provider so they may seek medical guidance. See the CDC's guidelines here for instructions.

Donate Used Devices to Seniors for Telehealth Appointments

Telehealth For Seniors is collecting donations of old tablets, phones, computers, and chargers for seniors in need to use for telehealth appointments during the COVID-19 crisis. Many physician practices are switching to a telehealth model, which allows for patients to make appointments with their doctors via video chat without putting both their health and the doctor's health at risk. Unfortunately, many seniors—whose health is most at risk—do not have smartphones with cameras or access to the internet. They will be unable to make virtual appointments, and either will have to forego care or risk their health to visit a provider. By providing seniors (who are often on subsidized health insurance) with video-enabled devices, they will be able to take advantage of free wifi hotspots with Spectrum, or use the wifi outside of doctors' offices or their neighbors' homes to conduct their doctors' appointments. Telehealth For Seniors will provide seniors with guidance on how to set up an email and account for telehealth. To do this, Telehealth For Seniors needs help providing seniors with electronic devices. Volunteers who have old iPads, iPhones, Samsung Tablets, or other camera-enabled electronics are encouraged to consider donating them. Chargers are also helpful. To volunteer: Express interest below to record this opportunity in your Volunteer New York! profile MANDATORY: Wipe and restore your old device to factory settings so all of your information will be deleted and safe for others to use. Donate Your Graduation Gown to Healthcare Heroes

Whether your graduation gown is collecting dust in the back of your closet or is no longer needed for a 2020 commencement, you can donate yours to help protect a healthcare worker.
