Food Pantry Support Volunteers

Westchester Community Health Center's food pantry provides nutritious food and essential items to patients and families in White Plains, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers. Food Pantry Volunteers help create a welcoming, dignified experience—from greeting clients and assembling bags to stocking shelves and keeping the space clean and organized.

Responsibilities:

  • Client support and wayfinding: welcome clients, answer basic questions, and direct them to check-in or services as needed
  • Intake and distribution: assist with simple sign-in/intake processes; assemble food bags according to guidelines (dietary needs, family size, and inventory)
  • Stocking and inventory: receive deliveries, date-label items (FIFO), restock shelves, and help with basic inventory counts
  • Food safety and cleanliness: follow WCHC pantry and food-handling guidelines; keep work areas tidy; promptly report spills or items needing attention to Maintenance
  • Donations and packing: sort donations, prepare grab-and-go bags, and help set up special distribution days
  • Communication and collaboration: coordinate with front desk and Patient Advocacy staff to ensure smooth client flow
  • Privacy: safeguard client information and treat all clients with courtesy and respect
  • Other duties: perform related tasks as assigned by staff

Skills and qualifications:

  • Friendly, patient-centered communication; strong listening skills
  • Prior customer service or community service experience preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
  • Basic computer familiarity (e.g. simple data entry)
  • Able to stand/walk during a shift and lift up to 30–40 pounds (with reasonable accommodation available)
  • Health screening/immunization is required per WCHC policy

Time commitment and training:

  • This is an ongoing role requiring a minimum 3-month commitment and a weekly 2-3 hour shift (weekday daytime)
  • Health screening/immunization clearance may be required per WCHC policy
  • Orientation and role-specific training provided (including pantry procedures and food-safety basics)
  • Ongoing support from the Volunteer Services team
