Opportunity Details

2024 Riverkeeper Sweep - White Plains

The Clean River Project program addresses floatable trash, one of the three major water quality issues on the Bronx River. Volunteers participate in real science, through hands-on experience, to collect information that helps find the source of trash in order to stop it from entering the river in the first place. The project engages volunteers by promoting outreach to local businesses whose products end up in and along the river, and unites messaging around the harm to waterways caused by non-biodegradable products.

Volunteers will be on land and in the river (wearing waders) to find and count bottles, cans, straws, and more in the trash boom and on the pathway nearby. This day's project is one of the many locations taking place to celebrate the 13th annual Riverkeeper Sweep!

What to know:

  • Dress for the weather; check the forecast before leaving
  • Wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and items that can get dirty. You will need socks if you want to go in the waders
  • All supplies will be provided, including waders, but please bring your own reusable water bottle
  • Gloves will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you have them
  • Volunteers 12 and under require a parent or chaperone to register as part of their team. Volunteers under 14 will participate in the land cleanup only
  • Registered volunteers will receive an email with location details and an insurance waiver 1 day before the event. Please add volunteer@thewpf.org to your address book to ensure you receive this information

Weather/cancellation policy:

  • Volunteers will work in most weather, including cold, heat, and light precipitation, so please dress accordingly! Westchester Parks Foundation will cancel the project if the weather seems like it may affect the safety of its volunteers.
  • In the case of inclement weather, the project may be cancelled up to an hour before the project start time. If you do not receive a cancellation email from Westchester Parks Foundation or Volunteer New York! before then, the project is still taking place.

Registration for this opportunity ends 24 hours prior to the project start time.
