Conservation Volunteer Days

A typical Conservation Volunteer Day begins with a short welcome and orientation from Westmoreland Sanctuary's naturalist staff. Volunteers learn about the day's project, the ecology of the sanctuary, and how the work contributes to protecting native plants and animals.

Then the group heads out onto the trails to tackle hands-on conservation projects such as:

  • Removing invasive plants like barberry, privet, or bittersweet
  • Maintaining trails by clearing branches and improving walkways
  • Restoring habitat for native plants and wildlife
  • Helping care for wildlife gardens or planting native species

All work is guided by sanctuary staff and suitable for beginners. Tools and instruction are provided, so no prior experience is necessary.

Along the way, volunteers often learn about local ecosystems, wildlife, and land stewardship while exploring parts of the preserve that many visitors never see. Beyond the conservation work, the day is also a chance to:

  • Spend time outdoors in a peaceful natural setting
  • Meet others who care about the environment
  • Gain practical conservation skills
  • Make a lasting impact on the health of the sanctuary's trails and habitats

Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for outdoor work, as well as a reusable water bottle. Sign up for one or more shifts below!
