Mural Project Designer

Westchester Community Health Center (WCHC) is seeking a professional mural artist to collaborate with its school-based health centers and pediatric teams on a special community art project. Together with youth and staff, the selected designer will help conceptualize and guide the creation of a mural for the pediatric units. This initiative combines creativity, youth engagement, and healing design to make WCHC's pediatric spaces more welcoming, calming, and inspiring for children and families.

Responsibilities:

  • Design leadership: develop and propose mural concepts in collaboration with WCHC staff, students, and community members
  • Youth engagement: facilitate participatory design sessions with students from school-based centers
  • Artistic guidance: lead or co-lead the painting process, ensuring safety and quality of the final mural
  • Collaboration: work closely with Pediatrics, Facilities, and Community Engagement staff to align with space requirements
  • Project documentation: share progress photos or notes to highlight the collaborative process
  • Community spirit: promote creativity, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity throughout the project

Skills and qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in mural or large-scale community art projects (portfolio required)
  • Strong facilitation and collaboration skills, especially with youth and diverse groups
  • Ability to translate complex ideas into child-friendly, welcoming, and visually engaging artwork
  • Commitment to deadlines and project milestones
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) communication skills a plus

Time commitment and training:

  • Project duration is 8-12 weeks (planning, design, and execution phases)
  • Weekly time commitment is flexible, depending on stage of project and artist availability
  • Orientation to WCHC mission and values provided
  • Health screening/immunization clearance may be required per WCHC policy

Standards and safety:

  • Follow all WCHC safety and infection control protocols during on-site work
  • Use non-toxic, child-safe materials
  • Coordinate with Facilities for installation or wall preparation needs
