ESOL Tutors for Refugees

Hearts & Homes for Refugees is looking for Volunteer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Tutors to help provide support to its refugee clients, either through one-to-one in-person tutoring, online casual conversation practice, or homework tutoring for K-12 students. Volunteers are provided with:
  • Volunteer onboarding, including a cultural orientation video and best practice guidelines
  • Weekly or biweekly reflection sessions for feedback and to troubleshoot concerns as they arise
  • ESOL curricular materials
  • Example lessons
  • A listing of various ESOL resources to explore

Volunteers are asked to:

  • Make at least a 4-month commitment (with the hope that they will continue!)
  • Schedule tutoring lessons for one or two hours per week (with the option of meeting more frequently)
  • Communicate with ESOL coordinators and other tutors who work with the same new neighbor, if applicable

Hearts & Homes for Refugees (HHR) offers a local solution to the global refugee crisis by inspiring, educating, and equipping community partners to resettle and empower refugees to rebuild their lives with hope and dignity. Our vision is to create life-changing and bridge-building opportunities that encourage tolerance, respect, and welcoming for those forced to flee their homes. Together with community volunteers, faith, civic and student groups, we provide the scaffolding of support for up to one year with programs led by trained and compassionate staff and volunteers. Grassroots community efforts address all aspects of resettlement, deepening roots and improving refugee outcomes. This work is life-changing for both our new neighbors and those resettling them.
