Readiness thru Integrated Service Engagement
"Inclusion elevates all"
Young adults whether disabled or non disabled use volunteering as a way to explore vocations, build skills and to build their network to help them get an edge in getting a job. The RISE: Readiness thru Integrated Service Engagement program of Volunteer New York! offers volunteer placements for young adults with intellectual & developmental disabilities to give them extra support to ensure a successful experience so they can gain skills which can lead to better employment opportunities.
In October 2017 Think to Lead, LLC founder, Dr. Marian Gryzlo (who is also a graduate of Leadership Westchester), presented a workshop called, RISE to the Occasion, to a small group of RISE volunteers here at our homebase in Tarrytown. As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Dr. Gryzlo's interactive workshop was intended to help participants identify their core strengths, while considering how they can apply these strengths and talents to their ongoing RISE volunteer work and in their own lives. The 20 participants created individual "skill boards" to represent their interests, which they used to share and discuss their skills with the class.
During Volunteer Month (April 2017), the 1st cohort of volunteers to have gone through RISE celebrated with Volunteer New York! at Arc Of Westchester for a special awards certificate presentation. In its first year there have been 107 RISE volunteers that have volunteered for a total of 438 hours (and counting) to 13 local nonprofits.
What does the impact of 438 hours look like? Thats bagging 1140 lunches for people with food insecurity, assembling 350 sock bundles for individuals experiencing homelessness, serving 125 seniors a weekly lunch, sorting 160 bags of clothing for children in need, creating 105 handmade cards for veterans and deployed troops, and more! Thank you to the Taft Foundation for your generous support in making this possible.
ABOUT RISE (Readiness thru Integrated Service Enagement) – The RISE program helps secure volunteer placements for higher functioning adults with an intellectual or developmental disability. RISE addresses the growing need to find meaningful community experiences for these young adults who are eager to take action to strengthen our communities and build their skills for a successful future. RISE is managed by Patti Colombo, MS, CTRS, who brings over 30 years experience as a Recreation Therapist working with adults with developmental disabilities.
