Summer Reading Buddies 2016

Our summer program, called Summer Reading Buddies is a perfect opportunity for you to get started as a volunteer mentor.

Last year more than 1,000 children read with over 240 mentors and we anticipate even greater participation this year.  Volunteers are paired with children in grades K-6 who come to the library for help with their summer reading list assigned by their school. 

Summer Reading Buddies will run at the Riverfront Library, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am – 12pm for 6 weeks starting Tuesday July 5^th.  



Please help us increase literacy in our community through this rewarding – and fun! – program.


WE NEED YOU!
 
Volunteers should expect to work with several children during each 2 hour session. The children will have selected a book and then be matched up with a volunteer. After introductions the “buddies” will find a spot where they can work together for 20 minutes.  The volunteer will encourage the student to read, help with specific words, pronunciation and comprehension. When they’ve finished the book the volunteer will help the child complete a worksheet.  We give out “passports” to every child who registers for Summer Reading Buddies and each child gets a stamp on his passport for each day they attend.  The volunteer will then bring the child back to our staff who will match them up with their next “buddy”.
