2026-2027 AmeriCorps VISTA for Day Laborer Support Program

Catholic Charities Community Services of Westchester is seeking an individual to fulfill its AmeriCorps VISTA role supporting immigrant-focused programming. The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) VISTA is a full-time paraprofessional who works on capacity-building projects supporting anti-poverty programs and services for our immigrant and day laborer neighbors.

Why it's important:
Day laborers are vulnerable to unfair labor practices and often subjected to workplace violations. These include non-payment of wages, excessive hours with no overtime pay, illegal deductions from wages, lack of meal breaks, exposure to health and safety violations, lack of protective equipment, no worker's compensation, discrimination, harassment, and immigration threats. Catholic Charities helps day laborers to earn a living, contribute to society, and integrate within the community.

NYIC VISTA requirements:

  • Commit to this full-time role for 12 months
  • Work on capacity building projects to support programming for immigrants and day laborers

NYIC VISTA benefits:

  • Living allowance (an AmeriCorps VISTA stipend ranging from $24,962 to $32,262 depending on the county that the position is based out of)
  • Choice of a health plan for AmeriCorps VISTAs or a health voucher to cover medical expenses not fully covered by insurance
  • Choice of a year-end education award ($7,395 voucher) or cash stipend ($1,803)
  • Eligibility for benefits such as:
    • Funds for relocation
    • Child care support
    • Student loan forbearance/deferment

This role is perfect for individuals who have an interest in ending immigrant poverty, developing valuable nonprofit skills and experience, giving back to their community, and supporting an organization working with the immigrant and refugee community.
