2026 Freedom School Activity Volunteers

The YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester's Freedom School allows children to dedicate their summer break to building a love of reading, learning, and leadership. To complete this experience, volunteers are needed to lead 45-minute enrichment sessions that introduce these youth scholars to a variety of subjects, including different talents, hobbies, professions, or passions. Each session is comprised of about 16 youth scholars from a single grade level, though age groups can be combined if it suits the volunteer activity leader's activity or presentation.

Session topics may include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Music and dance
  • Sports and fitness
  • Cooking and nutrition
  • Technology and coding
  • Gardening
  • Storytelling and writing
  • Science experiments
  • Career exploration
  • Wellness and mindfulness
  • Theater and creative expression
  • ...or any other unique subject that could inspire young minds

Time commitment:

  • Sessions are 45 minutes long
  • There are two session opportunities per day: 1-2 p.m. and 2-3 p.m.
  • Sessions take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from July 7-August 20
  • Volunteers can offer to lead as many sessions as they'd like
