2026 Read Across America Day: Read Dr. Seuss to Children

Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6—it begins on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading.

Family Services of Westchester's Early Childhood program plans to do its part, too! On the morning of Monday, March 2, volunteers will be reading Green Eggs and Ham to the students in all 12 of its centers in approximately 60 classrooms. Storytime will be followed by a theme-related activity.

Family Services of Westchester is seeking two volunteers for each classroom—readers are encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character to help make this experience extra special for children.

This opportunity requires volunteers to complete a mandatory application:

  1. Express interest below to record this opportunity in your Volunteer New York! profile and to alert the volunteer coordinator, who will contact you to discuss available reading locations.
  2. Click here to complete your mandatory volunteer application with Family Services of Westchester. Volunteers who do not complete this step may not be registered!

Founded in 1954, Family Services of Westchester (FSW) is a private, nonprofit, non-sectarian social services agency that provides mental health and social services to strengthen and support families, children, and individuals at every stage of their lives. FSW's Head Start/Early Head Start is a federal government program that was created in 1965 to give preschool children from low-income families a "head start" on their readiness for elementary school.
