Reach Out and Read Program Readers
Help Open Door Care Network share the joy of reading with children of all ages during its annual Reach Out and Read program! Volunteers are needed to read to young patients while they wait in the health center's waiting rooms. The children will then be able to bring the books they read home with them.
Volunteers will:
- Bring a rolling book cart to the children in waiting areas
- Partner with a young child and help make the stories come to life by reading to them
- Demonstrate reading techniques that parents can use at home
- Chat with the parents about reading aloud to their child at home and provide reading tips
- Help the child select a book to take home
Volunteers are needed in three locations: Ossining, Sleepy Hollow, and Port Chester. Staff will work with volunteers to choose a health center and develop a reading schedule.
Reach Out and Read is a national literacy program designed to take place in medical offices which gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together.
