Library Assistants

The Westchester Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute for Nonviolence is seeking volunteer Library Assistants to help with a variety of tasks at the MLK Freedom Library, which holds a collection of fiction and nonfiction books and media on the Civil Rights Movement, African American leaders, culture, nonviolence, peace, and more.

Volunteer activities include:

  • Support communications, marketing, and publicity efforts
  • Assist with programs for children, youth and adults, including book discussions
  • Update the database
  • Organize books and other library materials
  • Put protective covers on books
  • Help patrons locate books and resources
  • Support library events and programs
  • Check in and check out library materials
  • Provide customer service to library visitors
  • Assist with maintaining a clean and organized library environment
  • Help with data entry and cataloging as needed

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for books and reading
  • Ability to work collaboratively with library staff and patrons
  • Attention to detail and reliability
  • Previous experience in a library is a plus, but not required
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with library catalog systems are beneficial
