American Soil for Soldiers Project

Let soldiers overseas know that they have not been forgotten with Project Soil. Volunteers place a spoonful of American soil into a tiny baggie (easily found in craft stores), seal it, and staple it to the inside of a hand-written card alongside the words "Here is a bit of American soil so you don't feel so far from home."

This is the perfect project for young children, students looking for community service hours, and teams of grown-ups or employees. Volunteers can make as many cards as they'd like, but please keep track of the time spent (if it's for community service).


This is a self-directed project. To volunteer:

  1. Express interest below to record this activity in your Volunteer New York! profile and to alert the volunteer coordinator.
  2. Follow the instructions above to create your American Soil cards. Please be sure the baggies of dirt are sealed completely! See photos here and here for examples.
  3. Mail or drop off your cards to:
