Legacy Leaders Mentors for Young Adults
CHOICE of NY, in partnership with the Opportunity Youth Part Program (OYP), is seeking caring, dependable volunteers to serve as Legacy Leaders Mentors for young adults ages 18-24 who are involved in the criminal justice system within the City of New Rochelle. Mentors will serve as supportive role models by sharing encouragement, life experiences, and practical guidance while helping young adults recognize their strengths and opportunities.
Volunteer Mentor Role:
Volunteer Mentors participate in monthly community-based group sessions that are facilitated by CHOICE of NY's Youth Empowerment Specialist, who will guide conversations, introduce discussion topics, and create a welcoming and supportive environment for participants.
Discussion themes may include:
- Personal growth and identity
- Leadership and responsibility
- Goal-setting and future planning
- Communication and relationships
- Education and career readiness
- Overcoming challenges and making positive choices
- Building community connections and creating a lasting legacy
Volunteer Mentors Are:
- Compassionate, dependable, and good listeners.
- Supportive of second chances and believe in the potential of every young adult.
- Interested in making a positive difference in their community.
- Comfortable participating in group conversations and sharing encouragement, insight, and life experiences.
- From diverse backgrounds, including education, workforce development, counseling, coaching, entrepreneurship, community service, faith-based service, or lived experience.
Training and Support:
- No prior mentoring experience required. CHOICE of NY will provide mentor orientation, training, and ongoing support through its mentoring platform to help volunteers feel prepared and confident in their role.
- Mentors will receive guidance from CHOICE of NY's Youth Empowerment Specialist and support through the Legacy Leaders framework to help create meaningful, consistent, and impactful mentoring experiences.
- All mentors must complete the required screening process and follow program guidelines designed to create a safe, respectful, and supportive experience for everyone involved.
Time Commitment:
- Mentors are asked to commit to participating in one group mentoring session each month for approximately two hours, along with completing required training and orientation.
