2024 Community Farm Work Day: Trees for Tribs

Hilltop Hanover Farm is hosting its Community Farm Work Day, Trees for Tribs, and it needs volunteers with all levels of gardening, pruning, and tree care experience to help.

Maintaining the protected Trees for Tributaries area alongside the farm is key to ensuring healthy trees and a vibrant riparian ecosystem. Volunteers will be checking and repairing tree mesh and stakes and perform light pruning and weed removal. Training and all supplies will be provided and volunteers must be able to lift a lightweight plastic tube above shoulder height, open and close zip ties, manipulate pruners, walk through uneven terrain, and use a rubber mallet/hammer.

How to be prepared for the day:

  • Expect to get dirty!
  • Dress for the weather and wear hats and/or sunscreen; this event occurs rain or shine
  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes
  • Bring a reusable water bottle
  • Alert the volunteer coordinator (contact information provided upon registration) for those arriving late or leaving early
  • Park in the overflow parking lot directly across the street from the main farm campus
  • All ages and abilities welcome, but volunteers 12-15 are required to sign up as part of an adult's family, group, or team below

From the DEC: Trees for Tribs is a statewide program that has been working to reforest and support plantings along tributaries (“tribs”), small creeks, and streams that flow into larger rivers and lakes. The goal is to create or improve riparian (streamside) buffers that decrease erosion, reduce flooding damage, improve wildlife and stream habitat, and protect water quality, creating healthier, more climate-resilient communities.
