Fight Homelessness in Westchester as a Point-in-Time Count Enumerator

The Westchester County Continuum of Care Partnership for the Homeless (CoC) is seeking volunteers to help count the people experiencing homelessness in Westchester County. Volunteer enumerators will be assigned a geographic area where they will partner with professional outreach workers and local law enforcement.

Volunteers are integral in the PIT Count campaign; this project helps Westchester County end homelessness by enhancing understanding and knowledge of this issue, which helps the region develop sustainable solutions. During this hands-on experience, volunteers will directly learn about homelessness and its impact in their communities, as well as have the opportunity to foster connections with other compassionate Westchester County residents.

Key responsibilities:

  • During the night of the PIT count, volunteers will count homeless individuals sleeping unsheltered in areas not ordinarily used as a place for human habitation. This includes sidewalks, parks, transit stations, commercial establishments, alleyways, bushes, vehicles, and hand-built structures
  • Complete a mandatory 90-minute in-person training prior to the night of the count
  • Follow counting protocols and guidelines to ensure safe, accurate, and timely data collection
  • Check-in on the evening of the PIT count at an assigned count site
  • Work with teams to survey an assigned route within a specific census tract area
  • Submit completed counting materials to Count Site Coordinators at the end of the shift
  • Interest in Westchester County CoC mission of ending homelessness in the Westchester County region
  • Self-motivated and able to work well with little supervision
  • Ability to make clear decisions with sound judgement
  • Dependable, adaptable, flexible, and punctual
  • Able to physically walk and/or drive 1 to 2 miles
  • Access to reliable mode of transportation
  • Age 18 years or older
Time commitment:
Counters commit to a 90-minute training and a shift of 4 to 6 hours depending on their geographic area.
