Cause - Other

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." -Steve Jobs

Research & Outreach

Goal for this position is to assist us in attracting more volunteer groups to go on our trips to Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Our groups vary from public and private high schools, faith-based organizations, colleges and universities, business professional and corporate groups as well as medical groups. This is a Business Engagement position, not a sales position. The person needs to be comfortable performing basic online research in order to create a list of potential groups to contact. Primary outreach efforts will be by email and/or phone. Volunteer must be articulate enough to understand and express passion for our mission when communicating with potential clients. Contacting returning adult volunteers to solicit their feedback would also be involved. Ideally this volunteer position would be for 2X week for 3-4 hours each time.

Dungeons & Dragons DM - Teen Program

The White Plains Y is looking for a dedicated volunteer who can help us run one or more Dungeons & Dragons campaigns over the course of the Summer. We have a small group of teenagers who enjoy roleplaying through campaigns and all we are lacking a DM who can provide a good experience. Volunteers do not necessarily need experience with Dungeons & Dragons - just a creative mindset and a willingness to learn. This would be taking place primarily in the evening during the week, although there might be some flexibility based off of the availablity of the teens. Role Requirements Volunteers applying for this position should be aware that campaigns can take days or weeks to complete. An ideal volunteer would be able to keep a consistent schedule throughout the Summer. This is also a position that benefits greatly through performance and creativity - although not required it always helps when a DM can act and voice characters to help with the immersion of the campaign. As with all of our volunteers, background checks are required and volunteers will need to be cleared before they can start working with the youth.

Science Barge Volunteers

The Science Barge is a prototype sustainable urban farm developed by NY Sun Works and acquired by Groundwork Hudson Valley in October, 2008 to be operated as an environmental education center. The Science Barge greenhouse, floating on the Hudson River, grows an abundance of fresh produce including tomatoes, melons, greens, and lettuce with zero net carbon emissions, zero pesticides, and zero runoff. All of the energy needed to power the Barge is generated by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels while the hydroponic greenhouse is irrigated solely by collected rainwater and purified river water, thus operating completely “off the grid.” It is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York. It is now docked in downtown Yonkers just north of the Yonkers Pier. During the winter, Barge Director Bob Walters will be on board every Sunday coordinating volunteer projects for those willing to brave the cold of winter on the Hudson (the greenhouse does stay relatively warm)! Come any time between 12pm and 4pm and stay as long as you like. Please call Bob at 914-375-2151 or e-mail bob@groundworkhv.org if you are interested in participating. During our growing season, from mid-April through early November, the Barge is open to volunteer every Thursday from 6pm-8pm and Sunday from 10am-12pm. During these hours you can stop by and join Bob Walters, the Director of the Barge, in various maintenance and repair projects. If you are interested in being trained as a volunteer docent, call us to find out when the next training session is. We can always use more weekend docents!

Kids For Wish Kids®

Kids For Wish Kids® is a program for kids who, in their own creative way, can help other kids who have life-threatening medical conditions. It is designed especially for K-12 school students, student organizations and other youth groups such as scout troops, summer camps and day care centers. Children and students of all ages create ideas for fundraisers and manage the projects with help from their teachers, leaders or supervisors. The Kids for Wish Kids® program helps to increase awareness of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s mission and involves more people in helping to grant wishes. Our program gives teachers everything they need to make this a fun-filled experience while showing our children the importance of helping others. It also fosters the value of community service, provides a mechanism for building school spirit, and creates additional partnerships between children and teachers outside the classroom.
