The Share the Dream Cake for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is one volunteer project out of many that will be available for MLK Day:
Have fun with your kids and teach them about sharing.
What is it? Volunteers of all ages will get together to make cakes or a batch of cookies (maybe in a heart shape) to be shared or given to a community service of their choice (e.g. a homeless shelter, a soup kitchen, neighbors…). This can also be done with friends or as a family project.
When? The projects will happen between Saturday, January, 17th and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January, 19th.
Make the cake: For this community project we encourage families to shop at local businesses. The introduction of a seasonal fruit is encouraged. Black and white cakes are very welcome. “Share the Dream” can be written on the cake in memory of Martin Luther King’s message and legacy as well as the name of recipient/nonprofit, and/or a special wish for your community.
Share the cake and let us know about your dream: Before going out and sharing the cake with the recipients of your choice please take a picture and post it online (Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter) with the tags: #dreamcake @VolunteerNYnow and a message about your dream and your cake!
