2016-2018 Conflict Resolution Workshop Facilitators - New Rochelle

Job Description

Becoming an AVP facilitator requires no special qualifications. A PhD or a MSW is not necessary (but certainly welcome). The only requirement is your desire to reduce violence in our community, your interest in developing conflict resolution skills and your willingness to commit to completing the AVP facilitator training.

The AVP facilitator training involves three, three-day workshops: a Basic Workshop, an Advanced Workshop and a Training for Facilitators Workshop. Facilitators are only expected to lead two or three workshops per year although more would certainly be welcome. In prisons, these are always on weekends; in the community, they may be mid-week or weekends, or one or two evenings a week for several weeks. AVP uses a team leadership model, so beginning facilitators always have the support of experienced team members.

For those who are interested in facilitating workshops in prisons, it is necessary to become a registered volunteer at the prison where you wish to work. This involves contacting the Volunteer Services Supervisor at the prison and filling out some paperwork. AVP can guide you through this process.

About the AVP Program

Starting with one conflict resolution workshop in Dutchess County, NY in 1975, the Alternatives to Violence Project has become a global program operating in 30 states and more than 50 countries.

The Westchester AVP Group conducted 60 conflict resolution workshops in 2015 and plans to do more in 2016. We are seeking more facilitators in order to reach that goal. 

AVP provides several types of workshops including the standard Basic Workshop, Advanced Workshop and the Training for Facilitators workshop. In addition we provide workshops on special topics such as Anger Management, Trauma Resiliency, Relationships, and Manly Awareness

AVP conducted more than a dozen community workshops in 2015 that were held in White Plains, Yonkers, Purchase and Mount Vernon. We plan to do more community workshops, especially for youth, but we need more facilitators.

AVP provides workshops in both English and Spanish. In 2015 we provided Spanish or bilingual workshops in White Plains, Yonkers and in the prisons. Spanish-English bilingual facilitators are needed.

AVP provides conflict resolution workshops in Sing Sing Men’s Prison, Bedford Hills Women’s Prison and Otisville Men’s Prison. There are often long waiting lists for these workshops, and more facilitators will help to meet this need.

AVP also offers a weekly support group at Sing Sing Correctional Facility for inmates who have taken the AVP training. (We are looking for support group leaders. This may be of interest to volunteers since it only involves one evening a week from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.)
