Meet and Move Activity Advisors

Northern Westchester Hospital is looking for Meet and Move Activity Volunteer Advisors to help their neighbors improve their enjoyment and level of physical activity, help them overcome barriers, and provide them with encouragement and positive feedback. This is an ideal opportunity for professional or retired health and fitness coaches, as well as any compassionate volunteer with an interest in promoting healthy recreation.

Volunteers will:

• Receive referrals of individuals who could benefit from improved physical activity from clinicians and other resources in the community, or by self-referral
• Promptly reach out to these individuals to discuss opportunities in the local community, to help address barriers, and to encourage participation
• Understand, respect, and follow individuals' preferences regarding additional follow-up
• Maintain a current knowledge base of how to access available resources and activities in the community
• Where applicable and as permitted by the individual user, provide brief status reports back to the source of the referral
• Participate in regular meetings with the Team Leader and other coaches to review issues, and to provide critical feedback on program design
• Participate in ongoing education regarding health coaching, physical activities, and the use of local recreational resources and digital tools
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding individual medical or personal information

Qualifications:

• Excellent active listening and verbal communication skills; comfortable providing health coaching via telephone
• Maturity in discussing personal topics with individuals, with a sensitivity to boundaries
• Knows when and how to continue or end a conversation or relationship with a community member (using a coach is voluntary)
• Positive attitude; oriented to motivation techniques and other related aspects of health coaching; non-judgmental
• A genuine interest in physical activities and familiarity with a wide range of recreational activities
• Interest in public health/"healthy communities" a plus
