Blood Donor Screeners - Westchester County

The American Red Cross is looking for volunteer Blood Donor Screeners to assist with its temperature-taking and blood donor screening process in Westchester County. These volunteers MUST properly follow the donation screening process and keep the donation area clean to help ensure the safety of blood donors, staff, and other volunteers in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Responsibilities:
  • Model excellent customer service behaviors
  • Greet blood donors and assist with the screening and temperature-taking process
  • Manage the flow of blood donors into the site, ensuring that only donors who pass the temperature screen can enter the donation center
  • Explain the purpose of the temperature screen to donors and ensure they understand reasons for deferral, if applicable
  • Direct blood donors to the next step of the donation process or provide options for future donations if they were deferred
Blood Donor Screeners MUST be comfortable with the following tasks:
  • Handling supplies, including: thermometer and probe covers, trash baskets, gloves, hand sanitizers, Sani-cloths or Cavi-cide
  • Wearing gloves at all times and changing them between each donor
  • Using a new probe cover on an electronic thermometer or a new disposable thermometer for each donor
  • Not repeating temperatures for any reason
  • Taking temperatures, which includes inserting the thermometer into the donor's mouth, holding the probe, reading the temperature, and discarding the probe cover or the disposable thermometer
  • Checking to see if the donor's temperature is acceptable
  • Advising the donor if above 99.5°F to defer from donating on current day
  • Cleaning the electronic thermometer, probe, and probe wiring between each donor with Sani-cloth or Cavi-cide
Qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Ability to display the utmost professionalism and communication skills using diplomacy and tact
  • Extremely comfortable working with people from diverse communities and backgrounds
  • Ability to understand technology needed for position
  • Comfortable taking temperatures and explaining processes
Time Commitment:
  • One blood drive shift per month is required to remain an active volunteer in good standing. The length of a typical Donor Center shift or blood drive is 4-5 hours
  • Blood drive hours typically take place Monday-Friday between 8 a.m.-7 p.m. There may be an occasional drive on a Saturday
