Children's Art Program Co-Leader

Abbott House is seeking a friendly, creative, energetic volunteer (or two) who can help plan and organize fun arts and crafts activities for the unaccompanied minors in its Transitional Resources for Children (TRC) Program. This program is held every Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and consists of set up, implementing the activity, and cleaning up the space. Arts and crafts are a great therapeutic outlet for children who suffer trauma, and those who love arts and crafts, can commit to a weekly program, and want to make a meaningful difference in a child’s life are encouraged to volunteer!

The volunteer(s) will have the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with the Development Department and work closely with the Lead Program Volunteer to plan, research, and organize a monthly calendar of arts and crafts activities, as well as a supply budget.
  • Secure donated supplies or purchase supplies based on budget and submit receipts for reimbursement as needed.
  • Help maintain an inventory of supplies and keep the art closet organized.
  • Make a strong commitment to volunteer at the program every Tuesday evening.
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the program to help set up (stay 30 minutes after to coordinate clean up).
  • Help explain the project to the kids, provide assistance, and engage with them.
  • Manage student volunteers and other adult volunteers who sign up to assist on Tuesday evenings (ensure they are helping with set up/clean up, make sure they stay engaged, and are contributing toward the success of the program).
  • Encourage, praise, and chat with the children from Abbott House.
  • Bilingual (Spanish and English) skills preferred, but not required.
  • Therapeutic art experience a plus!

NY State and Abbott House mandates full-clearance vetting to meet the requirements of this position.
