2019 Conflict Resolution Workshop Facilitators - Purchase

The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) is a volunteer organization that provides programs for youth, community groups, and prison inmates to learn new skills in order to deal with the conflicts in their lives. These programs are lead by volunteer workshop facilitators. Becoming a workshop facilitator requires no special qualifications; the only requirement is the desire to reduce violence in the community and a commitment to completing the training!

Facilitator training involves three weekend-long workshops: a Basic Workshop, an Advanced Workshop, and a Training for Facilitators Workshop. Each begins on a Friday evening and ends that Sunday. Volunteer facilitators receive a manual with exercises for the workshops; they then apprentice in a workshop either in prison or in the community. There are two to four facilitators per workshop, and volunteers are expected lead two or three weekend workshops per year (although more are welcome!).

During the workshops, facilitators lead a series of experiential role-playing exercises dealing with conflict resolution skills where they focus on affirmation, communication, cooperation, teamwork, and creative conflict resolution.

The next Basic Workshop will take place at Purchase Quaker Meeting House from October 4-6:

  • Friday from 7:00-10:00 p.m.
  • Saturday from 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Sunday from 1-8 p.m.

Meals will be provided for Saturday lunch and supper and Sunday supper. The Advanced and Training for Facilitators Workshops are scheduled after the Basic Workshop is completed.
