American Eel Migration Project

Each spring the Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) participates in the NYS DEC's American Eel Migration Study. During this project, teams of scientists, students, and community members count migrating glass eels travelling up the Hudson River. The juvenile glass eels are counted (over 1,200 last year!) and released, with important information collected about their population and health in the Hudson River. Volunteers enter our marsh with waders to check a fyke net for the eels. We also measure water quality and weather conditions as part of the sampling. CURB is 1 of about 15 sites along the Hudson River watershed participating in this project.

Sampling is tentatively slated to begin on February 26th and will continue through May. We are looking for volunteer help on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. The sampling and data collection typically takes about an hour. Waders are provided for entering the marsh. Volunteers must be comfortable handling small fish, as well as working in wet and muddy conditions. We sample rain or shine. No prior experience necessary!

*Please note that volunteers must be available during the hours listed above. We do not have evening or weekend hours available. Must be reliable!

The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available.
