Open Door Family Medical Center's Reach Out and Read Program in Port Chester is recruiting volunteers to read books aloud to our young patients in our waiting areas, chat with the parent and help the child select a book to take home.
Volunteers take a rolling book cart to our waiting areas and make books come alive for kids. There are so many fun ways to approach reading to make it exciting for children: read with different tones for different characters, ask questions, count, point out colors, shapes and objects. Sounds so simple? It is, and it make a big impact on promoting kindergarten readiness for underserved children.
Volunteers should plan for a regular weekly shift. This can be as short as 1 hour or much longer, you let us know! An everyother week shift of 2+ hours is also available.
An application and medical information are required. We will host a background check for those 18 years or older.
