Reading To End Racism
The ultimate goal of Reading to End Racism is to empower students to stand up and speak out in the face of racism and discrimination whenever and wherever they encounter it. RER also aims to provide students and teachers alike with the tools necessary to facilitate meaningful conversations about racism and the resources needed to create solutions to conflicts. We believe that an enhanced understanding of social and racial justice issues will promote peaceful relationships among students and will create a safe, nurturing environment in which every student can thrive. Local educators and volunteers are provided training via video and a manual depicting how to facilitate age-appropriate discussions within a prescribed, but flexible classroom format. Reading to End Racism provides support materials such as an extensive booklist categorized by age, gender, and race; and also provides conversational models appropriate for any learning environment. At the end of the sessions, individual organizations have the flexibility of identifying a specific project to develop and present at their individual locations, should they so choose.
